Uncluttering

Besides uncluttering our menu and finances, I’m also trying to unclutter our house.  Easier said than done.  By nature, I’m a hoarder.  I blame it all on my dad 😉  He hoards, his dad hoarded… Not only did I inherit the gene to hoard, I also inherited the organizing gene from my mother.  I’m frequently at battle with myself.  The piles of clutter drive me insane but the thought of throwing something away… something I think I might need someday…

The last two moves have really helped me to cut down on the amount of stuff I hang onto.  I know that I’m getting much better at letting go but there’s still plenty that I want to clear out.  One big area is my craft room.  I used to sell rubber stamps and I have the collection to prove it.  Part of me wants to hang onto the 200+ sets because I enjoy stamping – although I rarely do it any more – and I remember the fun I had stamping as a child – although I rarely let me children use my stamps lest the ruin any of them.  Not only do I have stamps, I have scrapbook supplies up the wazoo.  Seriously.  My brother works for a company that makes scrapbooking supplies.  I have way more than I will ever use.  I have a paper addiction.  It’s so pretty but I don’t spend much time actually scrapbooking.  But if I get rid of it then I’ll never scrapbook.  My compromise?  I’m going digital.  I have found online sources of free “paper” and I’m going to try it for a few months.  Then, my plan is to scan images of my stamps to use digitally, which enables me to get rid of my stacks and stacks of stamps!

My other obsession is books.  I love to read.  I love to own books.  I almost never re-read books.  A few months ago I joined paperbackswap.com and I’ve been able to share my books and in return get some new ones to read.  There’s just one tiny problem.  I have a set of hardback books that I have hung onto since college.  My Stephen King collection.  They take up over half of my bookshelf and they just sit there collecting dust.  What’s a girl to do?  I’m finally ready to send them to a new home.  I just can’t decide if I should put them on eBay, Craigslist or donate them?

Slowly but surely I’m cutting through the clutter and it is liberating; less stress over stuff.  There have been some websites that have been inspirational in uncluttering.  I hope that maybe you’ll enjoy them too.
